Growth is often sold as something beautiful, inevitable, constant, empowering and exciting. We imagine growth as transformation, glowups, new opportunities. But what we don’t talk about is the loneliness that often comes with it.

The quiet distance, the empty space where family, friends, habits and versions of ourselves use to fill. Choosing growth even when it’s lonely is not always loud and celebrated. It’s often deeply isolated.

You talk less, go out less, associate less with people, family, friends, colleagues. It might feel depressing at first but eventually you get to understand that some of the most meaningful growth happens in solitude.

Boundaries from being disrespected, being picked on or being in an uncomfortable situation. Growth makes you understand the difference between being valued and being the one available at the time.

Most people take advantage of the fact you let them ride all over you instead of telling you to stand up for yourself. And sadly, families are not exempted from such behavior.

Growth makes these things noticeable, and you begin to question yourself in the past. You realize that letting go or setting boundaries between you and that friend, family or loved one sets you free and gives you a sense of peace.

And you might be alone or have fewer friends, but you will be comfortable in your own skin. You feel empowered and in control. And you start to realize you weren’t selfish for choosing growth and setting boundaries.

When You Outgrow What Once Felt Like Home

When you choose growth, you experience change and you begin to outgrow conversations that once entertained you.

Stop tolerating behaviors you once endured. You no longer find fulfillment in places that once felt like home.

You begin to see patterns clearly: emotionally, mentally, psychologically, unhealthy attachment. Once you see them you cannot unsee them.

Your vision becomes clearer. You may no longer actively relate to people who are still comfortable in places you have outgrown.

And because growth happens first internally before it shows externally. Others may not recognize the depth of what you are going through.

Some might think you have a superiority complex because you refuse to keep being and feeling small.

Might even go as far as avoiding you because you no longer fit in their circle of constant ridicule. You have outgrown them completely.

You might be of higher status and think you no longer need growth as you are already on top and influential or you already experienced in all levels and have acquired the highest level of growth.

The truth is growth is constant. There is no limit for it. We can always do more, earn more, learn more, achieve more.

Choosing growth means understanding there’s never a finish line. We just get comfortable with our achievement and don’t bother to reach for more because what we have is enough. And when it is, there’s always a chance to do more.

Trusting the Process

One of the hardest parts of choosing growth is trusting that the loneliness won’t last forever. It can feel like standing alone in unfamiliar ground.

That’s why sometimes we prefer to be in our comfort zone with the fear of feeling lonely or regretful. We stay where we don’t have to try too hard because ‘what if I try and fail and things start to get messy, would growth be worth it then?’

Growth can be anything. It can be spiritual, physical, it can be leaving your comfort zone in order to live better. Growth is not always a race we can run with others. And it gets lonely when we decide to embark on this journey alone.

Most people leave their homes and go to a faraway land in search of something better. A place where they have no one. They get lonely, sad and even home sick.

But in order to experience the amount of growth you long for, certain sacrifice has to be made. And if it means you will endure loneliness for a little while to see that change, then it will be worth it at the end.

Growth gives you an understanding that temporary loneliness is often the price of long-term fulfillment.

Growth Changes Your Standard

As you grow your standard automatically increases, not just for people but for yourself too. You become more intentional with your time, energy, and emotional investment.

You stop forcing connections that no longer aligned with you. Choosing growth may shrink your circle, but it strengthens your foundation all round.

Fewer people don’t mean less love. It means more honesty, more peace. You learn that quality matter over quantity, especially when it comes to relationships.

Choosing Yourself Anyway

Choosing growth even when it’s lonely is an act of self-respect. It shows that your future matters more than temporary comfort.

And as you continue choosing yourself, pushing through with your purpose, you begin to meet people who resonate with the upgraded and evolved version of yourself.

Relationships that don’t require you to shrink, explain or stage a performance. Connection built on shared value, mutual respect and understanding.
